PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the waiting times which accompany changes in the reading condition. SOLUTION: The image-reading apparatus includes a scanner 210, capable of outputting image data by sequentially scanning images of a plurality of documents fed to a reading position under any of a first operating mode and a second operating mode during which operations are different from each other; a document determining section 411 for determining, based on the image data, whether the read document corresponds to the first operating mode or the second operating mode; and a CPU 261 for reading an n-th ((n) is a natural number) document under the first operating mode, while using the reading means, and performing control so that when the determining means determines that the n-th document does not correspond to the first operating mode, to read an (n+1)th document under the first operating mode while using the reading means and to read, after the (n+1)th document is read, the n-th document under the second operating mode, while using the reading means.
