PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that prevents generation of an electric field that causes discharge or toner scattering between an intermediate transfer body and a member adjacent thereto, without reducing durability of the intermediate transfer body and a transfer condition. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a photoreceptor 11 for carrying a toner image; an intermediate transfer belt 21 moving in a predetermined direction in contact with the photoreceptor 11; a primary transfer roller 26 for transferring the toner image on the photoreceptor 11 to the intermediate transfer belt 21; and a secondary transfer device 27 for transferring the toner image on the intermediate transfer belt 21 to a sheet s. The image forming apparatus has an electrode member 60 grounded so as to be selectively in contact with or separated from the back of the toner holding surface of the intermediate transfer belt 21.
