Novel alkylenedioxythiophene compounds are claimed. Novel alkylenedioxythiophene compounds (I) of formula (1) are claimed. A = 1-5C alkylene optionally substituted by a urethane group via the linker group L and optionally further substituted; L = methylene; x = 0, 1 or greater than 1; n = 1-4; R = n valent, optionally substituted 1-22C aliphatic group, 3-12C cycloaliphatic or 6-14C aromatic group Independent claims are included for: (i) a process for the production of compounds of formula (1) by reaction of hydroxy compounds of formula (2) with mono-, di and/or higher isocyanates of formula R(NCO)n (3); (ii) a process for the preparation of oligo- and poly(alkylenedioxythiophene) compounds (II) having urethane group containing side chains by polymerization of compounds of formula (1); (iii) the resulting oligo- and poly(alkylenedioxythiophene) compounds (II); (iv) the hydroxy compounds of formula (2).
