Acrylonitrile and 2 to 8 per cent of a vinyl pyridine are copolymerized in aqueous media at a pH of less than 6 in the presence of a catalyst such as alpha, alpha azodiisobutyronitrile, peroxides, or sodium, potassium, lithium, barium, magnesium, calcium or ammonium persulphates which may be activated by an oxidizable sulphoxy compound such as sodium bisulphite, metabisulphite, hydrosulphite, or thiosulphate, sulphur dioxide, diethyl sulphite, formamidine sulphinic acid, or p-toluene sulphinic acid. Vinyl pyridines specified are the alpha, beta, and gamma vinyl pyridines and their methyl and ethyl ring substitution derivatives such as 5-ethyl-2-vinyl pyridine and 2-methyl-5-vinyl pyridine; mixtures of two or more of these vinyl pyridines may be copolymerized with acrylonitrile. The process may be carried out in a batchwise or continuous process, and the aqueous medium may contain the sodium sulphate of a hydrocarbon of from 15 to 18 carbon atoms as an emulsifying agent. The copolymers thus produced are of a uniform molecular weight between 10,000 and 100,000, and may be dissolved in dimethyl formamide and dry spun to provide filaments which may be oriented by stretching and dyed with acid and direct dyestuffs.ALSO:Fibre forming copolymers susceptible to dyeing with acid or direct dyestuffs are made by copolymerizing a mixture of acrylonitrile and 2 to 8 per cent of a vinyl pyridine.
