PURPOSE: A shift control device and a method of the auto transmission are provided to improve the transmission quality during down shifting by preventing the shifting chock in advance caused b the turbine pulley. CONSTITUTION: A deceleration detection sensor(10) senses the down shift transmission request. A shift control sensor(50) senses the shift state of shift gear. A shift control unit(30) sets the oil pressure control duty pattern of a clutch. A transmission drive unit(60) implements the oil pressure control to the oil pressure control duty pattern of the clutch.
