PURPOSE: A method for preparing polylactic acid or lactic acid copolymer from xylose is provided. CONSTITUTION: A method for preparing lactate polymer or hydroxyalkanoate-lactate copolymer from xylose comprises: a step of culturing or cultivating cell or plant with production ability of lactate polymer or hydroxyalkanoate-lactate copolymer under the condition where lactate and xylose or lactate, xylose, and hydroxyalkanoate; and a step of collecting lactate polymer or hydroxyalkanoate-lactate copolymer from the cell or plant.
