<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine, immediately resolving contamination of a plug. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This control device for the internal combustion engine includes: contamination degree calculation means (S35, S41) calculating the degree of the progress of the contamination of the ignition plug (a value of a contamination integration counter); a cleaning determination means (S46) determining whether or not the calculated degree of the progress of the contamination is in a plug cleaning request state exceeding a reference degree (a second reference value KUSU); and a cleaning control means (S40) controlling to perform cleaning discharge for removing foreign matter attached to the ignition plug when the calculated degrees determined to be a cleaning request state (S46:NO). With this structure, when the degree of the progress of the contamination is greater than the reference degree, the cleaning discharge is performed separately from normal ignition discharge. Thereby, by the cleaning discharge, carbon attached to the ignition plug is burnt out and unburnt fuel is blown away.
