Disclosed is an alkali resistant glass, comprising: a silicate-containing glass body; a pre-formed passivity layer formed on an exterior surface of the silicate containing glass body, wherein the passivity layer is formed by hydrothermal treatment in a basic environment and has a composition that is different than the composition of the glass body, said passivity layer formed prior to use and comprising a substance that is native to the silicate-containing glass body, wherein the substance includes iron, calcium, magnesium or combinations thereof, wherein said substance in the passivity layer results in the passivity layer being substantially chemically inert in an alkaline environment. Also disclosed is a cementitious composite article comprising a cementitious material and a pre-formed alkali resistant glass additive comprising the alkali resistant glass disclosed above.
