PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical scanner achieving reduction in thickness and increase in operating speed using a multibeam light source, and to provide an image forming apparatus using the optical scanner. SOLUTION: The optical scanner includes: a plurality of light sources including one or more light emitting units composed of a pair of light sources; first optical systems each of which is provided at each one of the plurality of light sources and converts the luminous flux emitted from the light source into a desired form of luminous flux; a deflector which deflects the luminous fluxes emitted from the light sources and converted to the desired form of luminous fluxes with the first optical systems for each light emitting unit simultaneously on the same deflective reflection face; a coupling optical system which images the deflected luminous fluxes onto faces to be scanned corresponding to each of the plurality of light sources; and a polarization direction adjustment means which adjusts a pair of luminous fluxes emitted from the light emitting units so that the luminous fluxes are made incident orthogonally on the deflective reflection face of the deflector. Each of the plurality of light sources has a plurality of light emitting points, and the imaging optical system includes a polarized light beam splitter (PBS) for dispersing the deflected light beams.
