PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide copy detection technique of a line picture effective even to drastic conversion of handwriting or the like. SOLUTION: This original picture retrieval method includes: an area determination process of determining a plurality of local areas each representing a local characteristic from the line picture of a retrieval question; a characteristic extraction process of extracting a characteristic vector (a query characteristic vector) corresponding to the characteristic of each determined local area; a collation process of collating each retrieval question characteristic vector with a characteristic vector (an original picture characteristic vector) registered in an original picture database, and determining each neighborhood original picture characteristic vector about each query characteristic vector; and a process of determining whether or not the line picture having a characteristic close to the retrieval question is registered in the original picture database, and specifying the line picture. In the area determination process, each local area having resistance to a density change and a light/shade change of an image and enveloping a prescribed amount of line component is extracted from the line picture of a target.
