<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator capable of securing a wide working space surrounded by handrails in an elevator not including a machine room. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This elevator includes: a car 4 to be elevated inside a hoistway 2; a counterweight 19 to be elevated on a back surface 18 side of the car 4; a traction sheave 26 to be rotated around a rotation axis H horizontally extending in the back and forth direction along one side inner wall 29; a driving device 3 provided so as to be coaxial with the traction sheave 26, for driving the traction sheave 26 to rotate around the rotation axis H; two deflector sheaves 33 and 34, each provided near the one side inner wall 29, and rotating around the rotation axis horizontally extending in the right and left direction; and a rope 25. The traction sheave 26 is arranged so as to be positioned in a space between the back surface of the car 4 and a rear inner wall surface 44 of the hoistway 2 when viewed from upper side in the vertical direction, and the driving device 3 is arranged so as to be overlapped with the car 4 in one part thereof when viewed from upper side in the vertical direction.
