727,132. Making cartons; packaging. THRISSELL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Aug. 24, 1951 [Sept. 4, 1950], No. 21728/50. Classes 18 and 94 (1). A machine for making openended tubular carton shells, scores and applies glue to blanks, folds them on two opposed creases and secures the overlapping edges, opens the tubes so formed and flattens them on the remaining two creases, opens them again and flattens them on the first creases, these operations being carried out without changing the lengthwise movement of the tube. The machine cuts the finished tubes into required lengths. Forming the tubes. Blanks 1 are fed to belts 6, 7 which carry them past a glue roller 9 and scoring roller 12. Rollers 15, 16 draw the blanks between guides 13, 14, and wheels 17 and a folding belt 18, turn over opposite ends of the blank to overlap at the glued edge. To secure the glue joint, the tubes pass between a drum 20 and belt 22 to a pair of slow moving belts 29, 30 where they accumulate in overlapping relation and the glue has time to set, as described in Specification 727,230. Refolding. The tubes pass onto a platform 39a where a vertically reciprocating stop 42 permits them to pass one a at time to the refolding section through which they travel at the same speed as the initial feed to the machine. The refolding section comprises sets of opposed grooved wheels of known kind which open and close the tube as stated above. Cutting to length. The tubes are received from the .refolding section by belts 50, 51 and aligned by a guide 56 and stop 57. Pivoted arms 61 press the side of the tubes protruding from the belts 50, 51 against belts 58, 59 which carry them sideways from between the belts 50, 51 to belts 68, 69. Each end of the tubes is aligned by reciprocating stops 71 which halt the tubes momentarily, and lengthwise alignment is produced at this point by a horizontally reciprocating plate 71a. The tubes are passed to cutting rollers 93 and the cut lengths are received on a platform 94. |
