A plate-type apparatus, for producing ozone by continuous silent electric discharges between flat electrodes having a stabilising dielectric layer interposed between them, comprises electrodes 2, 3 and dielectric layers 5 formed as annular discs and arranged as a plate battery in a metallic tube 1 having a cooling jacket, alternate electrodes 2 having their circumferences in heat-conducting contact with the tube. The gas to be ozonised is introduced through the central apertures 7 of the discs, flows through narrow slots defined by distance pieces 6 between the electrodes, where ozone is formed, and is drawn off through exhaust channels 8 at the wall of the tube 1 which communicate with each other through recesses at the circumferences of the electrodes 2, or inversely. The electrodes. 2 perferably consist of rigid metal discs of such thickness that no substantial difference of temperature between different points of each electrode is possible. Insulating rings 4 may be provided at the inner edges of the electrodes 2 and at the outer edges of the electrodes 3. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, Fig. 2 (not shown), the electrodes in contact with the tube wall are naked and their counter-electrodes are covered by dielectric layers, the electrodes having a substantially greater central aperture than the dielectric layers so that the latter prevent spark discharges between the electrodes. The apparatus is preferably operated at a pressure of several atmospheres, e.g. 5-20 atmospheres, the width of the slots in the electric discharge zone then being 0À1-0À4 mms. The water used for cooling the tube 1 may be subjected to approximately the same pressure as the gas in the interior of the system so that the tube may have a relatively thin inner wall. The dielectric layers may consist of a material having a high dielectric constant and small dielectric losses, e.g. a material including a. titanium compound. The tube and the electrodes 2 may be connected to earth while the counter-electrodes are connected with an electric lead 9 disposed in the axial space of the apparatus.
