<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine performing precision ignition timing control by using cylinder internal pressure detected in a combustion stroke. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This control device for the internal combustion engine includes an ignition timing control means which calculates a combustion rate as a heat production rate at each point with respect to the total heat production generated from start of combustion to end of combustion based on the cylinder internal pressure detected by a cylinder internal pressure sensor 50 provided to the cylinder 12 of the internal combustion engine, and controls the ignition timing of the internal combustion engine so that the combustion rate at a predetermined crank angle reaches a target value. Abnormality of output of the cylinder internal pressure sensor 50 in a high-pressure area is determined based on the amount of lag of the crank angle when the combustion rate in the combustion stroke reaches a predetermined value.
