<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly assist an obstacle avoidance operation performed by a driver. <P>SOLUTION: An obstacle detecting means detects a position of an obstacle around own vehicle. In addition, a means for estimating a distribution of existence probability estimates a distribution of presence probability of an obstacle around the own vehicle in response to a detected position and a characteristic of detected error included in the detected position under a characteristic of the obstacle detecting means. Then, an avoidance assisting means assists an obstacle avoidance operation performed by a driver in response to the estimated distribution of presence probability. Accordingly, in the case that a detected error included in the result of detection, i.e. a detected error of a position of the obstacle is high in response to a characteristic of the obstacle detecting means, for example, it is possible to reduce a presence probability of the obstacle. Thus, it is possible to reduce an amount of assistance of the obstacle avoidance operation. As a result, it is possible to restrict interference of the assistance of the avoidance operation against the obstacle avoidance operation performed by the driver.
