<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine suppressing degradation in combustion efficiency while reducing a compression ratio. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine 1 having an intake valve 6 opening or closing an intake passage 5 connected to a combustion chamber 2, includes: a pressure accumulation part 10 communicating with the combustion chamber through a passage part 11; and a passage part open/close valve 12 opening or closing the passage part. Valve closing time of the intake valve at an intake stroke of the internal combustion engine is near the bottom dead center. The passage part open/close valve temporarily closes the passage part after generating negative pressure in the pressure accumulation part while opening the passage part at the intake stroke, and opens the passage part again near the bottom dead center.
