PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel cord for reinforcing rubber articles which can prevent the preceding breakage of the outermost layer filaments in the steel cord having a double twisted structure and can maintain a high cord strength over a long period, and to provide a pneumatic tire using the steel cords as a reinforcing material. SOLUTION: In the steel cord having a double-twisted structure, used for reinforcing rubber articles, and produced by twisting a plurality of strands 5 each having a layer-twisted structure and produced by twisting a plurality of steel filaments, at least one of the strands 5 is high carbon steel filaments which are produced by drawing high carbon steel wires subjected to a patenting treatment and having a carbon content of not less than 0.88 mass%, and have a wire-drawing processing strain of not more than 3.8 and a tensile strength of not less than 2,800 N/mm<SP>2</SP>.
