An armrest suitable for a wheelchair comprises a main fixed armrest 1 and a supplementary armrest member 2 which can be pivoted from a non-working position, e.g. a vertically dropped position [Fig. 7], to a working position in which it is flush with and expands the surface area of the main armrest member 1. The fixed armrest part 1 has a first pivot portion 11 which includes a first pivot hole 12. The movable armrest member 2 is pivotally connected to the first pivot portion 11 of the fixed armrest member via a second pivot portion 22 and pivot shaft 23. The movable armrest member 2 has a spring biased slide member 3 which acts upon engaging members 4 to urge the engaging members 4 to engage with holes 15 in the fixed armrest member 1 thereby locking the movable member 2 in the raised flush position. If the slide member 3 is pulled outward against spring bias, the engaging members 4 are caused to slide along slots 26,34 formed on the slide 3 and the movable armrest 2 thereby becoming disengaged from the holes 15 in the fixed armrest 1. |
