PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display device and a manufacturing method thereof are provided to prevent light leakage by forming a light blocking layer, thereby improving picture quality. CONSTITUTION: The first substrate(120) is defined by a pixel area and a data line area. A shielding layer(122) includes the first thickness and the second thickness thicker than the first thickness on the first substrate of the data line area. A data line(128) is overlapped with the shielding layer with the first thickness with a gate insulating layer(124) between the data line and the shielding layer. A common electrode(154) is formed on the second substrate(150) facing the first substrate.
