Vinyl formate is polymerized or copolymerized with other vinyl esters using as solvent a formic acid ester of a saturated monohydric alcohol or a mixture of organic solvents including such an ester. The other solvent may be dioxane or acetone, and may be used to control the degree of polymerization, and the formic acid ester may be methyl formate. The catalyst may be azo-bisisobutyronitrile or triethyl boron and the polymerization temperature may range from -40 DEG -60 DEG C. The polymerization may be stopped by addition of an acetone or dioxane solution of hydroquinone or m-dinitrobenzene and the polymer precipitated by methanol. The polyvinyl ester may be saponified to yield polyvinyl alcohol. |
