<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more easily and swiftly detect the imbalance in the front and rear in the regular state for determination of the imbalance in the front and rear and for countermeasures against the abnormal imbalance in the front and rear, and to execute the countermeasures. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A bottomed cylindrical rotary drum 2 is set within an resiliently supported water tub 3 with a rotation shaft 2a in the horizontal direction or inclined downward toward the rear from the horizontal direction, and the rotary drum 2 is driven by a motor 5 in the rear of the water tub 3. Under this condition, a control means 20 computes the phase difference between an output signal of a vibration component in the forward vertical direction and an output signal of a vibration component in the forward back and forth direction at prescribed rotational speed, and determines the imbalance in the rear based on output signals of vibration components in a plurality of directions output from a vibration detecting means 40 in the step of rise of rotation of the rotary drum in the dewatering operation. The determination is applied to the determination of the imbalance in the front and rear in the regular state, and to the countermeasures against the abnormal imbalance in the front and rear.
