Regenerating a catalyst, whose catalytic activity is reduced by the adsorption of carbon, comprises irradiating the catalyst with the carbon deposition with high frequency electromagnetic waves for heating the carbon deposition. An independent claim is also included for a reactor for carrying out a catalytic reaction comprising a reactor vessel in which the catalyst is placed and a generator for generating a high frequency electromagnetic field in the reactor vessel for the process of regenerating the catalyst.
