[Also in Groups XI and XVII] In Fig. 1, apparatus for subdividing a flexible liquid-filled container into sealed compartments comprises a number of pressure-members 5 which are mounted on an endless band 4 and which are pressed one after the other towards the container 1. Further members 9 on another endless band 8 are also pressed towards the container and coact with the members 5. An inductor coil (not shown) is provided on each member 5 and a short pulse of high-frequency current is passed through it as an outer coupling coil 6 passes a stationary coupling coil 7. A further pair of bands with pressure members (not shown) is provided for forming adjacent joints at right angles to each other. Fig. 2 shows a pressure member 12 having zones 16 in which currents induced by a coil 13 are concentrated and which have small heat capacity in relation to the centre part of the member 12 ; rapid heating and cooling of these zones and of the joint in the sheet material 14 results. In Fig. 3, heating zones 16 are on the opposite side of the material 14 to the coil 13. The modification shown in Fig. 4 includes a thin metal layer 11, and the coil 13, which may be watercooled, is embedded in a magnetic material, e.g. iron powder. Two opposing pressure-members with heating zones which substantially coincide may be provided.</p> |
