<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely determine abnormality when the abnormality is caused in a pressure stage switching mechanism. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The hydraulic control device of an internal combustion engine includes the pressure stage switching mechanism 20 for switching a pressure stage of oil supplied to respective parts of the engine to a high pressure stage and a low pressure stage, and controls pressure of the oil by changing an operation mode of the mechanism 20, and has an oil pressure sensor 31 for detecting the pressure of the oil after being controlled by the mechanism 20. A command is outputted to the mechanism 20 for setting the pressure stage of the oil to the high pressure stage via an electronic control device 30, and after outputting the command, the pressure of the oil detected by the oil pressure sensor 31 is set as a value between a value supposed when set to the high pressure stage in an engine operation state at its time and a value supposed when set to the low pressure stage, and the effect of causing the abnormality in the mechanism 20 is determined on condition of being less than a high pressure stage abnormality-determining value.
