<p>A data-overwriting technique that facilitates determining whether data is new or old, when reading thereof. A tape recording apparatus comprises a receiving section which receives information relating to an overwriting-starting position and a request for overwriting, a trial section which tries to determine the position of the head of data units being data writing units recorded on a tape medium on the basis of the information relating to the position, an overwriting section which overwrites from the overwriting-starting position determined in response to success in determination by the trial section, and a class determining section which determines whether the data unit recorded at the overwriting-starting position is null, in response to a failure in determination by the trial section. In response to the determination that the data unit is null, the trial section retries the determination of the overwriting-starting position with the head of the next data unit following the data unit as the position of starting overwriting.</p> |
