The method involves determining operating conditions of an internal combustion engine and waste gas system by a controller on the basis of measurement results received by sensors. A diagnostic operation is accomplished by present given conditions of the controller, and the current starting temperature of the catalyst is determined in the diagnostic operating mode. The reference starting temperature provided in the controller is evaluated.
