PURPOSE: A discard timer operation apparatus of a transmission packet in a wireless communication system and a method thereof are provided to simplify software about discard timer operation by operating one discard timer about all transmission packets. CONSTITUTION: If hand over is generated before completion of a discard timer about a PDCP(Packet Data Convergence Protocol) SDU(N)(Service Data Unit), a PDCP layer processor drives the discard timer again(901). The processor calculates difference between an old discard timer value of an existing serving base station and a new discard timer value of a target base station. The processor subtracts the difference value in an NODT(Next Operating Discard Timer) value of an SDU (N+2)(903). If the discard timer is expired, the processor applies an updated NODT (N+1) value to the discard timer about an SDU (N+1)(907).
