The device has a variable transmittance part with an electrical energy source (9.1) and a transducer (9.3) with an integrated control unit (9.3.1) for transformation of a source voltage (UQ) of the source into an alternating voltage (UAC1) with reduced voltage amplitude and carrier frequency. A transformer (9.4) is coupled with an electrical filter circuit (9.11) depending on generation of an operating voltage from another alternating voltage for transparent surface elements (2-8) i.e. glass surfaces, with utilizable frequency, which is smaller than the carrier frequency. The electrical energy source is designed as a battery of a vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a method for operation of transparent surface elements.
