<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a refrigerator that can determine a fall of cooling capacity by always detecting the operating condition of the refrigerator, guess the service life of the refrigerator by estimating whether cooling is possible, and inform a user to the effect. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The refrigerator includes a refrigerating cycle that connects a compressor to refrigerating and freezing evaporators for cooling refrigerating and freezing storage spaces, and a control device for switching the operation of the refrigerating cycle alternately to a refrigerating mode and a freezing mode based on the temperature of each storage space and controlling the operation until each storage space reaches a set cooling temperature or a predetermined maximum operation time. When the operation time t<SB>F</SB>, t<SB>R</SB>in each mode of the refrigerating mode and freezing mode passes the maximum operation time t<SB>Fmax</SB>, t<SB>Rmax</SB>, if the temperature T<SB>F</SB>, T<SB>R</SB>of the refrigerating storage space or freezing storage space at that time is not lower than a predetermined life discrimination temperature higher than the set cooling temperature T<SB>Foff</SB>, T<SB>Roff</SB>, it is determined that the life as the refrigerator is close to the end, and the user is informed to the effect by an informing means.
