PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vital observation system for controlling the start and stop of an intravital observation device with low power consumption and keeping the stop state of the in vivo observation device without arranging a magnet closely to the device, and also to provide a method of driving the system. SOLUTION: The vital observation system 1 includes: the in vivo observation device (2) having in vivo information acquiring parts (4-6), a power source (9), a magnetic field detecting part (8) for detecting a magnetic field from an external part and outputting a detection result as an electric signal, and a power supply control part (7) for controlling the supply state of driving power to be supplied from the power source (9) to the in vivo information acquiring parts, according to the electric signal; and a magnetic field generating part (3) which is the magnetic field generating part for generating the magnetic field and includes a start and stop signal generating part (20) for generating a start and stop signal being the magnetic field to control the stop and start of the in vivo observation device, and a detecting part (23) for detecting the setting of the in vivo observation device to the magnetic field generating part.
