<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical scanner in which the variation in a main scanning magnification is detected with only one laser light detection means without providing an optical path changing means for guiding laser light to a synchronization detection sensor, and to provide an image forming apparatus. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The synchronization detection sensor 91 detects the laser light deflected with a polygon mirror 84, and is provided out of an effective exposure region on a scanning start side for setting the scanning start time in a main-scanning direction of the laser light L. The synchronization detection sensor 91 detects first laser light L1 guided by being reflected on the inner face of the outer wall face 85b of the end part on the scanning start side of an fθ lens 85, and detects second laser light L2 guided by passing the scanning start side of the lens part 85a of the fθ lens 85 at the outside of the effective exposure region.
