PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus highly accurately detecting and correcting the density of an image independently of the density of the image by controlling the product of the driving current of a light emitting element and its lighting time to be always a constant value, and to provide an image forming apparatus reducing the time required for initializing the image forming apparatus by turning on the light emitting element in a pulsed manner, thereby reducing the time required for stabilizing a quantity of light emitted by the light emitting element, that has been conventionally needed after turning on the light emitting element. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a developing section that forms a developer image on an image carrier; a transfer section that transfers the developer image formed on the image carrier to a transfer member; a detecting section that has the light emitting element for emitting light to the developer image transferred to the transfer member, and a light receiving element for detecting light reflected from the developer image; and a control section that controls the lighting period of the light emitting element of the detecting section, lighting time, driving current, or the time for detecting the light receiving element so that the response characteristic of the light receiving element is constant.
