<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To store a large number of document images and suppress image degradation in magnification in a monochromatic document read mode, and also suppress image degradation due to color misregistration or the like in magnification in a color document read mode. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In reading an image of a document in a monochromatic document read mode, a document reading apparatus reads the image of the document while conveying the document at a speed determined according to a magnification ratio, performs main scanning digital magnification on the read multivalued image using a main scanning direction magnification unit 303, binarizes the multivalued image using a binarization unit 304, and stores the binary image into a memory 306. On the other hand, in reading an image in a color document read mode, the document reading apparatus reads the image of the document while conveying the document at a predetermined speed, stores the read multivalued image into the memory 306, and performs the main scanning digital magnification and a sub scanning digital magnification on the multivalued image.
