PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical recording medium using a metal complex of a squarilium compound having a highly sensitive optical response to a purple-blue laser beam, and the like.

SOLUTION: The optical recording medium contains the metal complex of a squarilium compound represented by formula (I), [wherein R1represents H, or the like; k represents an integer of 0 to 5; R2, R3, R4and R5each represent H, an alkyl group, or the like; X represents a group having an active hydrogen; and A represents an aryl group, or the like].
