Composition and method for crop protection

Disclosed is a slurry composition for protecting crops, comprising: a phyllosilicate mineral a chelating agent; and multivalent ions wherein the composition has a pH of between about 9.0 and about 11.6. Also disclosed is a horticultural substrate coated with the above composition and a method of protecting a crop from freezing or a method for protecting crops from pest infestation, comprising applying to at least a portion of a surface of a crop an effective amount of the above slurry composition.
