<p>The invention relates to a method and a device for the verification of security elements of documents of value, such as bank notes, identification cards, payment cards, or the like. The invention further relates to a method and a device for the verification or the validation of valuable items having a display, for example, a computer, notebook or laptop, a cash register of a cash register system, or a handheld device. According to the invention, a first piece of information is disposed in at least one translucent region of a security element. According to the invention, a display displays a second piece of information at least in regions. Another piece of information is hidden either in the first or the second piece of information, or in both pieces of information, that cannot be or can barely be detected and/or read by a viewer without auxiliary means. For the verification or validation of valuable items with a display, a verification element having at least one substrate with at least one translucent region is used according to the invention, wherein a first piece of information is disposed in at least one translucent region of the substrate.
