PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide spherical cerium oxide which has sufficiently suppressed catalytic activity and has ultraviolet screening property in a wide wavelength region and a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: A product obtained by reacting an aqueous solution of a cerium salt compound with an alkali compound having carbon and oxygen atoms is fired to obtain the objective spherical cerium oxide uniform in particles and having an average particle diameter of 100-500 nm.
