<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an error rate from being deteriorated even when a write current at writing is set high, in a method and program for designing a magnetic recording medium. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In a method for designing a vertical magnetic recording medium using a computer, as a determination criterion for optimizing the film thickness of a soft magnetic underlayer of the vertical magnetic recording medium, the dependency of the write current to be applied to a head when writing a signal output from the head at reading is obtained, the ratio of a saturation output level as a signal output level at saturation to an excessive write current level which is 1.7 times the write current at writing as the signal output level at saturation is defined as a saturation ratio, and the ranges of the coercive force of the magnetic recording layer of the vertical magnetic recording medium and the film thickness of the soft magnetic substrate layer are optimized so that the saturation ratio falls within a fixed range.
