<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a covering chain stitch sewing machine capable of retaining the excellent outside appearance of a sewn part by disposing a topping thread at a prescribed position on the surface of a cloth against the tension of a needle thread. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A thread presser member 94 is connected to a topping shaft which drives a topping looper 90, and the thread presser member 94 is disposed above a topping guide 93. With this structure, the thread presser member 94 swings back and forth at an upper position of the topping guide 93 in conjunction with the topping looper 90.
