PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate a correction image having a desired depth of field from a picked-up image after image pickup. SOLUTION: A subject is picked up via an optical system 10 having an on-axis color aberration, thereby forming G, R, B signals (G0, R0, B0). The subject distance at each of positions of an original image are estimated from the magnitude of high-frequency components of the G, R, B signals of the original image. Meanwhile, high-frequency components of color signals corresponding to the maximum magnitude, of the sizes of the high-frequency components of G, R, B signals of the original image, are added to the other two color signals, thereby generating G, R, B signals (G1, R1, B1) of an intermediately generated image having high resolution for a wide subject distance range. Thereafter, the resolutions of the G, R, B signals of the intermediately generated image for a subject distance other than the subject distance of a main subject are reduced on the basis of the estimated subject distance, thereby generating G, R, B signals (G2, R2, B2) of a correction signal having shallow depth of field.
