<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original reader and an image forming apparatus capable of reading a shadow of an original which is being carried. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The original reader 100 includes a carrier 106 for carrying the original along a carrying path 104, a CCD unit 112 for reading the original at a read position 120 provided on the carrying path 104, and a control part 202 for executing control so as to read the shadow of the original being carried through the carrying path 104. Also, the original reader 100 includes a foreign matter detection circuit 192 for determining a foreign matter at the read position 120 from the shadow of the original read by the CCD unit 112.
