<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a preparation method of a vinyl aromatic polymer, achieving a high polymerization conversion rate and a higher molecular weight and obtaining a stable molecular weight, and to provide a preparation method of polystyrene. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The preparation method of a vinyl aromatic polymer is carried out by using a conjugate double bond-containing peroxy ketal expressed by two general formulae as a polymerization initiator, wherein the obtained vinyl aromatic polymer has a mass average molecular weight of at least 400,000, and the change rate in the mass average molecular weight of the vinyl aromatic polymer is not more than 3.0% in a period when the polymerization conversion rate changes from 70% to 90%.
