A nozzle 10 adapted to produce a foam suitable for extinguishing fires comprises a hollow barrel member 11 having aligned inlet and outlet openings, a manifold 18 adjacent the restricted barrel inlet 13 and provided with a plurality of jets 52 from which the foam solution is discharged into the barrel, a pervious member R mounted in a hood 119 across the barrel outlet so as to provide a plurality of interstices arranged to be continuously saturated by the solution, and a manifold 118 located between the manifold 18 and the member R and provided with jets 152 supplied with liquid foam at a lower pressure than the jets 52. Air is entrained through an inlet 12 provided with flared walls 15 and the liquid which comprises a mixture of water and a detergent foam-producing chemical, reaches the manifolds via a filter 51 located in a grip 30 which is rotatable with respect to the supply hose. A restriction (125), Fig. 5 (not shown) may be provided between the liquid supply and the manifold 118. The apparatus is carried in the manner of a gun. The pervious member R preferably comprises an inner net a and an outer net Q, both nets being of interwoven vinyl strands. The inner net may be of finer mesh than the outer net and the mesh of each net may vary over its area, the variation in the mesh of the first net being complementary to the variation in the mesh of the second net.
