To reduce size and improve performance in fuel cells, thinner and more porous electrodes are desirably employed. However, such electrodes are more prone to deflecting when subjected to the fluid pressures found in the fuel cell. Deflection is more likely to occur over larger unsupported areas, such as the gas distribution plenums in some fuel cell designs, and the result can be blockage of the plenums. Certain porous supports can be inserted into the plenums such that the electrodes are supported against deflection without adversely affect fuel cell performance. |
