<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum cleaner allowing a user to be free from operation sound and an operation time by not actuating an electric blower and a dust removing mechanism during the intermission of a cleaning operation. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The vacuum cleaner includes a cleaner body 20 which has a body case 22, an electric blower stored in the body case, a filter separating sucked dust from air, a stop switch provided at a hand operation section 13 and stopping the operation of the electric blower, a dust removing mechanism adapted to remove the dust on the filter by vibration when the stop switch is operated, and a control device controlling the operations of the dust removing mechanism and the electric blower. When intermitting the cleaning operation, a first engagement section provided at a suction port body or an extension pipe 12, and a second engagement section provided at the outer circumference of the body case are engaged together to retain the raised state of the extension pipe, detection means provided at the body case and detecting the engagement state of the extension pipe detects the engagement state of the extension pipe, and the controller stops the electric blower and retains the stop state of the dust removing mechanism.
