PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogen generation unit with high safety which is small-sized and portable and capable of generating hydrogen of an amount in response to the requirement by efficiently reacting water and a metallic material. SOLUTION: The hydrogen generation unit has a container 5 and a hydrogen generation element 4 contained in the container 5, and the hydrogen generation unit 4 is characterized by including a porous carrier in which a thin film layer of aluminum or an aluminum alloy is formed.
