The method involves detecting an emergency brake situation or a critical situation. A request of an engine torque is identified by the position of an accelerator pedal (4) of a motor vehicle. The engine torque corresponding to the position of the accelerator pedal is only adjusted when an enabling signal (10) is present, after the detection of the emergency braking situation or the critical situation. The enabling signal is activated by a driver. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a controller for upgrading a braking or engine torque control of a motor vehicle and for controlling a system of the motor vehicle; and (2) a motor vehicle with a system for detecting a driver request after an emergency braking situation or a critical situation.
