[Also in Division B2] A method of producing a breathable coated fabric comprises sandwiching the coated fabric between a tool, the face of which is provided with a multiplicity of primary projections having a length in excess of the depth of the coating and also being provided with a multiplicity of either secondary projections having a depth less than the depth of the coating or recessed portions and a base surface, applying heat to the plastic coating at least in the vicinity of the projections, applying pressure across the sandwich so causing the primary projections on the tool to penetrate the plastic coating and contact but not penetrate the fabric, the secondary projections or recessed portions providing the plastic coating with an embossed pattern. The tool may be heated before being brought into contact with the coating and may be in the form of a platen or a roller. The fabric may be a knitted, woven or non-woven fabric of natural or synthetic fibres, e.g. cotton, nylon, glass, polyethylene terephthalate or mixtures thereof. The plastic coating may be of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyamide or a vinyl homo- or copolymer, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, a vinyl acetate/ vinyl chloride copolymer, polystyrene, polyvinyl acetate, a vinyl chloride/vinylidene chloride copolymer, polyvinylidene chloride or a vinylidene chloride/acrylonitrile copolymer. The polymers may be compounded with plasticizers, blowing agents, stabilizers or pigments. In the examples, fabrics are coated with a plurality of layers of polyvinyl chloride, at least one of which contains a blowing agent, heated to foam said layer and treated by the method of the invention. |
