<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect fluorescence with high sensitivity by reducing noise light with high efficiency in an evanescent fluorescence detection method using fluorescent coloring matter hard to separate the noise light by a wavelength filter. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In a detection method for detecting an amount of a detection target substance A on the basis of the quantity of light Ld containing signal light Lf caused by the excitation of a fluorescent label F by bonding a fluorescent label bonding substance B<SB>F</SB>, of which the amount corresponds to that of the detection target substance A in a liquid sample S, to a sensor part 14, the amount of the detection target substance A is detected by using a fluorescent label F, which is obtained by including a plurality of fluorescent coloring matter molecules f by a dielectric 16 through which the fluorescence Lf generated from a plurality of the fluorescent coloring matter molecules f is transmitted, as the fluorescent label F, and by detecting the amount of the polarizing component Lc of the light Ld crossing the polarizing direction of exciting light Lo at a right angle.
