<p>The method involves subjecting a hydraulic cylinder (28) for supply of a hydraulic steering load by a pump (25) with a fluid. The vehicle steering system (10) is operated in a passive mode manually over a twist of a steering wheel (12), and a servo valve (16) is controlled as function of the twist of the steering wheel in such a manner that the hydraulic cylinder determines desired hydraulic steering load. The vehicle steering system is operated in an active mode by a control unit (21). The fluid flow of the hydraulic cylinder is controlled.
